I tested out the forums, and… crashed them.  If I can crash them, then there’s no sense having them on the site.  Added a chat box, where anyone can come in and chat on the site, to others.

It’s been confirmed that EQ3, is on the way, and that SOE, is working on the next installment.  At this point, it’s called EverQuest Next, however as they get closer to a release point, the name, could change.  We don’t know much about it, other then it is in the works.  What the look will be, is still a mystery, however with the success of WoW, I suspect that they will take on a cartoonish look – as most mmo’s are now steering towards these days.  They are aiming towards being the next mega-mmo, and will attempt to achieve a 10 million+ subscriber base.  I for one, will give it a try.

Read more about EQ3, here.

P.S. Vanguard, SOH while made by the same peeps who made EQ1, is not considered EQ3… perhaps though it would be considered EQ2.5???

P.S.S. An EverQuest movie is on the way, don’t confuse that as the EQ3 news.

We discuss the new Turbine Points, more in depth, find out how to remove the (harshest) penalties for 90 cents, how to earn them, where to find them, the cost of items, and the cost of the items in Turbine Points.  Got a question? Ask on our LOTRO Forums, from TomRiddle – our Lotro Guru.

While a few people think the f2p should be f2t (free to try), or forever trial :-) … You could get to level 50 if you were REALLY patient.

Some things in the forums:

No Lotteries for a few weeks

The next two weeks are going to be really crazy around here!

  • PAX Prime starts next Friday and quite a few of us are going (Come say HI!).
  • Free to Play launches on the 10th (8th for Subscribers).
  • There are a lot of changes coming for the community sites (you’re going to like them!)

With all of this and more going on, the lotteries are likely to run up against a lot of downtime, server config changes, updates, and heavy loads. Rather than risk players losing items or lotteries not going off as planned for whatever reasons, we’ve decided to postpone additional lotteries until things calm down a bit.

They aren’t going away forever, just for a few weeks. Duwis has assured me that, once things settle down, we’ll have all sorts of shiny new lottery tools to work with and possibly some of the changes you’ve been asking for. Not to mention items from the LOTRO Store will be added to the lotteries!

An inside source of mine was telling me about how Aeria Games, maker of Shaiya, Dynasty Warriors, and other free to play games, was banned from TinyPic. I am not sure why Aeria Games was using TinyPic in the first place, rather then using their own bandwidth, however they were struggling and in a fury on Saturday when this happened. My source thought it was because of them getting too much traffic off of the Dynasty Warriors images.

Part 2 of Cataclysm Overview

Written by Stuart Kerley. Edited by Stuart Davidson, of GamingHeaven

In our first blog about Cataclysm we provided an overview of WoW and took a look at some of the new features we can expect from the expansion. In this entry we’ll be taking a closer look at the new races that will be made available to play in Cataclysm, the Worgen and the Goblins. We’ll look at what these new races bring to their respective factions (Alliance and Horde) and the how Blizzards are introducing these races to us in their starting area storylines.

>>Warning – this article contains spoilers about the Worgen and Goblin starting zones. For anyone just wanting the basics, please do not click on the Spoiler tags.<<

Worgen you doing here?
For the Alliance the new race being made available in Cataclysm is the Worgen, or the Humans of Gilneas if you like. For those unfamiliar with the game, let us take a stroll down lore crescent.

The kingdom of Gilneas was formed following the disillusion of the empire of Arathor and is ruled by the House of Greymane. While the Gilneas supported the Alliance during the Second War, Genn Greymane was never a strong supporter of the Alliance and believed, perhaps foolishly, that his armies were strong enough to deal with any threat on their own.

Following the end of the Second War Genn decided that he’d had enough of the Alliance and pulled all his forces back to his kingdom, sealing it off from the rest of Azeroth by creating the Greymane Wall. No one was allowed to enter, and no one had heard anything from Gilneas, even during the Third War against the Burning Legion… until now.

With the sundering of Azeroth following Deathwing’s ascent in Cataclysm, the Greymane Wall is breached, opening up this area to the rest of the world and bringing the Worgen and their kingdom into the game.

The Worgen race will allow Alliance players the ability to create a new beastly class. While the Horde have always had the Tauren, the Alliance haven’t really had access to a non humanoid race (though we can argue about whether the Draenei are humanoid or not) so this alone is a change to the main mechanic. The class choices available for the Worgen are Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock and Druid. Death Knight is also currently available in the beta however it’s unclear if we’ll be able to create a Worgen Death Knight at the launch of Cataclysm.

As befits a race infected with lycanthropy the Worgen actually have two forms, something else brand new for a WoW race. When out of combat a Worgen can be in either human or Worgen form, a choice we can make ourselves. However when in combat the animal within is unleashed and the character is transformed into Worgen form.

Goblin Theft Auto
Cataclysm delivers the first ‘small’ race for the Horde, the Goblins. While the Alliance has always had Dwarfs and Gnomes the Horde have traditionally been a race of giants.

The Goblins have been part of WoW since its launch however they’ve always been a non player class. A tinkerer race, Goblins have provided the steampunk element to WoW with their mad inventions and machines, never willing to join either the Alliance or Horde, they have only ever been interested in turning a profit.

New players choosing Goblins will be able to select a class from Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage and Warlock. As with Worgen the Death Knight class is also currently available in the beta.

>>> Show ▼

Summary
Both the Worgen and Goblin starting zones are excellent and really show the lessons Blizzard have learned about questing and game immersion. Varied types of quests are provided, giving new players a solid grounding in the play style of, not only their class, but of WoW in general.

The storylines are gripping to say the least, especially when we consider that by the end of the above sections we have only experienced 5hrs of gameplay reaching level 10 or so. The darkness of the Worgen zone is contrasted with the humour and fun of the Goblin zone. Both have a sense of urgency and keep us wanting to take the next quest to find out what happens next. The visual design of the zones are quite distinctive, with Gilneas resembling 19th Century London and Kezan resembling Las Vegas merged with the slums of Bombay. Then when the floods start and the volcanoes begin to erupt Blizzard has made excellent use of their terrain phasing technology, completely changing the world around us as the story evolves.

New WoW players are certainly in for a treat when they start a Worgen or Goblin, and returning players will have a starting experience unlike any they’ve seen before in WoW.

As Blizzard have been able to deliver such a high level of quest immersion and superb quality in these starting areas for the new races, we can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the new zones for the level 80 to 85 levelling race.

Next time…
We’ll take a look at some of the new zones available in the beta and touch on what the new talent tree design will mean for WoW players.

Part 1 of Cataclysm Overview

Written by Stuart Kerley. Edited by Stuart Davidson, of GamingHeaven

For those of you that haven’t read my posts on the StarCraft 2 beta I should begin by being completely honest with you, I love Blizzard games. This love affair started with the Warcraft RTS games and when World of Warcraft was launched, oh boy, was I hooked.

I’ve played WoW since the open US beta in the autum of 2004. I even went as far as playing on the US realms, before they launched in Europe in 2005. I’ve played on PVP (Player vs Player) realms and PVE (Player vs Environment) realms. I’ve raided all the end game dungeons from Molten Core to Icecrown Citadel. I currently have 5 level 80 characters (Druid, Priest, Mage, Hunter and Death Knight) and I’m working on my 6th (Shaman, currently level 71).

When GamingHeaven was fortunate enough to be given a beta key from Blizzard for the new WoW expansion I jumped at the chance to get a sneak peak at what Blizzard have in store for us. Future blogs will cover our experience in the latest incarnation of WoW… for now, let’s discuss what WoW actually is and take a look at what new features Cataclysm holds…

The latest podcast from Torocast is up and it has some interesting information to share with you all from the Star Wars The Old Republic news front.

Of course we have all been waiting anxiously for the newest release from PCGamer magazine, on their October issue.  They were supposed to have a front cover and story dealing with the realization of space, and space combat in SWTOR.  Unless you are subscribed to the magazine or like to frequent the torrent community you haven’t been able to see that issue yet.  There was however an early release from Germany that was floating around on the interwebs, it was translated and discussed on this episode of Torocast.

You can link to the show notes here:

http://www.torocast.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2872#p25281

You can also download this episode from your Itunes.

There was also some nice information about 4 new playable species, the:

Sith Pureblood
Miraluka
Mirialans
Zabrak

If that wasn’t enough to wet your appetite there was also some good discussion of the addition of the line of sight mechanic in the game, and a few other interesting topics of discussion.  Altogether a very good listen this week.

Personally, I was slightly disappointed in the realization that space mechanic seems to be more of a rail style, I was hoping for an open space feel, but I don’t want to spoil the show for you so I will allow you to hear the info for yourself.  I will post the info from the October issue of PCGamer as soon as I can get my hands on the U.S. version here in a couple of days so stay tuned….

GomTV is starting a Global Starcraft II League this September!

- Players gain the right to play through monthly tournaments.
- E-Sports fans all over the world can watch through global broadcasting service.
- Players all around the world can participate.

Earlier today, Blizzard Entertainment’s partner GomTV revealed plans for an easily accessible worldwide league called the “Global StarCraft II League” (GSL). GomTV is planning on having monthly tournaments culminating in a main tournament and world championships for both the GSL 2010 and GSL 2011. Also, using GomTV’s global broadcasting service, everyone around the world will be able to watch the league live through the Internet or via smart phones.

The GSL will be held every month starting with an Open Starcraft II League with a total prize pool of 200,000,000 won (approximately 170,000 USD). GomTV will broadcast the games 5 days a week, which is more than the current StarCraft leagues that are broadcasted 1~2 times a week. This way, more players and viewers will be able to enjoy the league. Also, GSL will incorporate a system based on points to promote a healthy competition. There will be a final event at the end of the year to determine the true champion and finish up the league. Continue reading »

For those who don’t know what Warden is, it’s the program that was custom made by Blizzard to stop game hacks from working.  It’s responsible for killing off over 100,000 accounts worldwide.  What difference does this make to you? It means that bots and gamehacks, are on the rise, and Blizzard plans to do something about it in Starcraft 2.

We know that Warden can watch the game for memory injection (faulty), can watch for specific programs (accurate), and starts watching once the client is open – not after you login on the game.

If you do get caught cheating, they will usually give you 1 warning with a 3-7 day suspension.  After that, it’s insta ban.  You should however still be able to play single player, just not multiplayer.

I do not know if it is actually active or not, however I have read a couple people state that it is.  So be on your toes, if you use bots and game hacks.

The Maze

In doing Volume III Book II Chapter’s 5-7, You are given the deed: Exploration From Top to Bottom. While you are completing the objectives of Vol. III Bk II Ch 7, you will discover some of these locations, then you need to decide if you want to finish the deed. It took me almost 4 hours but I was taking screenshots, and notes.

There are two dungeons, Minas Elendur (ME) and Delotham (D) that are intertwined. Doors in the dungeons normally take you to the other dungeon, rarely a door just continues on in the same dungeon.

So here is the tricky time consuming bit to find a location in ME, you might have to go to D then find a door to apart of ME that cannot be reached by any other means (and vise-versa)

On my first char, I didn’t know about this deed, but decided some maps would help my friends and kinsmen so I ran another char through Vol III Book I, then Book II Just so I could get to this deed again but this time with a completed map to put in the annotations, the dialogue is cut from the chat panel so even though I cut out one place to find in screenshots of the deed, all are here… Continue reading »

As you most likely already know, I am owner of an account selling site, mmoaccountsales.com.  I recently received some emails from SOE, stating that something new is afoot in Texas.  It seems that Texas has decided to start taxing people’s subscriptions to online games.  This means that any subscription in the state of Texas will be charged a slight fee.  It makes me wonder on which other states or countries will follow, I imagine California, with their financial straits, but I also wonder if it will create a rebellion.  California already taxes items which you receive from other states via online transactions.  What more will follow? in a few years… maybe…

Credit goes to TomRiddle, for pointing out this article by PC Gamer, speaking with Tom Chilton, Lead Designer of WoW.

The rise of the free-to-play western MMO hasn’t gone unnoticed at Blizzard, developers of World of Warcraft, the dominant western subscription MMO. Speaking to PC Gamer at their studios in Irvine, California, World of Warcraft’s lead designer, Tom Chilton, explained that “at some point, it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee.”

Tom was speaking about the rapid expansion of free-to-play games in the west, and the terms under which Blizzard would consider a similar model for World of Warcraft. In the last year, classic western hardcore online games such as Lord of the Rings Online, Company of Heroes and Dungeons and Dragons Online have all embraced a free-to-play model, where microtransactions and item purchases are a substitute for a traditional subscription fee.

Yet Tom doesn’t think those games have gone free just to compete with World of Warcraft. “I feel like they’re doing that to compete with other games that are on a similar subscriber level to what they were at. I imagine that when one of them went free to play it cannibalized some of the other subscribers. I can definitely imagine that being the case with World of Warcraft. If another game comes along and blows us away it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee. Or even further down the line, when we have another MMO out.”

While the western view of World of Warcraft is that it’s a subscription-only MMO, the Blizzard team have long experimented with alternates to a traditional subscription to remain competitive in different markets. Multiple micro-transaction items are available to buy for the most committed World of Warcraft players – including shiny star horses, and warrior panda pets. In Korea, the game is sold purely via subscription fee, with no boxed product available. And Korean World of Warcraft subscribers will get to play StarCraft II for free, too. In Russia, StarCraft II is sold in small monthly instalments – a salve to a market where piracy is rampant.

Don’t cancel your subscription just yet though: WoW isn’t going free-to-play in the near term. When asked if Blizzard were actively considering the implications of a free-to-play model, Tom played down the idea of the game switching over right away. “We’re not spending a lot of time thinking about it. It’s not something that’s a reality for us in the near future.”

We’ve got much, much more on World of Warcraft: Cataclysm in the new issue of PC Gamer, on-sale tomorrow. We’ll be posting more Cataclysm news, impressions, and interviews over the coming week.

Blizzard has announced four Diablo III Characters so far: the Wizard, the Barbarian, the Witch Doctor, and the Monk. Videos and character concept images have revealed a number of details for each character class, including techniques each character has been confirmed to have available.

The Diablo series has long been revered by gamers in large part due to the innovative, unique playable character classes available to the player. The Amazon, Necromancer, Barbarian, Sorceress, and Paladin were joined in the Diablo II expansion by the Assassin and Druid. Each class had its own play style, and role in a party.

The announced Diablo III characters hold to this tradition. There are four that have been revealed to date, with one more due to be unveiled by Blizzard in the future. They are the Barbarian, the Monk, the Wizard, and the Witch Doctor. Each has its own strengths and combat style, and although Blizzard originally meant to have each class be available in a single gender, they have confirmed that all Diablo III characters will be available in either gender.
