PC Gamer was given access to the full list of cash shop items in the upcoming free-to-play version of Lord of the Rings Online. In addition to the usual cosmetic upgrades and XP boosts, LOTRO will be offering a few more unique purchases, such as unlocking additional auction house slots. Here are full details on three examples of cash shop items we saw during our E3 demo. Keep in mind that this is a beta and the prices are subject to change. (And that Josh is not a photographer by trade – Ed).

Gift of Lesser Innocence

“Provides the user with a temporary +1 bonus to their Innocence Virtue Rank for one hour.”

Alternatively, players can purchase a permanent boost to virtue

Price: 35 Points – about $0.50

Greater Tome of Deed Acceleration

“Accelerates the rate at which you complete slayer deeds. Deeds for Skirmish lieutenants are not accelerated by this item.”

There will be different tomes for different level characters, but it should double the rate that you complete the slayer deeds

Price: 300 Points – about $4.50

Map to the Misty Mountains

Using this map will transport you to the Misty Mountains, located in the Trollshaws. Maps may only be used once per hour.

Not all maps will be reusable and you’ll need to visit each city once before you’re eligible to buy the map to teleport there.

Price: 100 Points – about $1.50

=====================] Isengard [=======================

The Hobbits are going to Isengard! Speaking to PC Gamer on the show floor of E3 this week, LOTRO’s Executive Producer Kate Paiz told us, “We’re definitely planning to get players to Isengard next year”.

Isengard is the tower of Sauramon the White, Gandalf’s former friend who works for Sauron (the bad guy), and the setting for one of the most epic wizard battles in the entire LotR series. A central figure in several key moments in the storyline, it hasn’t been decided yet how involved the players will be in with Sauramon’s plight – but there is precedence for players taking control of central lore figures to act out these types of big moments.

Paiz also told us that they’re going to wait and see how players react to content packs (as opposed to expansions) before deciding if Isengard will be part of a content pack purchased through the in-game cash shop, or a full expansion.

  1. Looks like they are going in the way of games like RoM, where you can buy things which will help you level faster. I got a friend who works as a GM for Shaiya, she said that of the 4 games the company owns, they make $750k a month. Thats not a bad way to make money, and considering lotro does not really have many subscribers anymore…

  2. Yeah, the players are grumbling a lot and I agree the (NA) populations are dwindling to the point that most formerly robust kins have alliances (with other kins) to help fill out even a 6 person quest/instance

I hope the free to play business model helps keep the game going but have been really racking my brain why WB/Turbine is so sure it will, I mean Turebine REALLY (really!) pushed free trials. The ads were everywhere….. much more than I recall seeing ads/trials for DDO….. So in its 3 going on 3 1/2 years out there if you were a reader of the books (we call ourselves hippies sometimes, it is an old player base) or even from the movies you’ve probably given it a go…

if they want a younger player base and the lotro version of pvp is only vip or paid, their target group isn’t even going to be able to try that…

for someone who has not played the game ever and wants to pve and doesn’t mind only one quest line past the starter areas who doesn’t mind grinding on mobs (be a tailor to use the hides) you might be able to hit 50 really for free….
