I always thought the f2p model was from Korean game companies, DDO may have been one of the bigger US games to go there but f2p has been around a LONG time...

but then I consider Guild Wars, and Diablo 2 free to play as there are no monthly charges, I've always conceded paying a game maker for the game, just hate the monthly charges

HOW free are some free to play games?

some lists of free to play games:

World of Warcraft Could Go Free-To-Play, says Lead Designer Tom Chilton Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 http://news.filefront.com/world-of-warcraft-could-go-free-to-play-says-lead-designer-tom-chilton

“At some point, it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee.”

================================

I don't consider a free to play game, free The game developers and their publishers are not altruists they are in business, and businesses make money or go bankrupt

So I have always considered f2p as an extended trial version

I've played Maple Story and really could have leveled a lot without paying $ but got tired of feeling like I was playing Mario Bros only being able to move sideways or up and down

Wizards 101 says it is free forever and it IS, if you accept that you cannot finish even the beginning 10 levels of play without spending some $ to open a few zones....

I just started playing RoM but have only been on 45 minutes or so....

yep it seems more and more are jumping on the bandwagon. With the recent success of DnD's ftp model it seems that there is more to this ftp hooplah than I had thought.

WoW on the other hand, I really don't see why they would, they are in a league all their own. I suppose though in the future if they thought they could make more money than they are now they would do it as well.

All these other games that are doing it however needed a shot in the arm. I am hoping it goes well for them all though because I am all for the gaming market increasing and adding new players to their ranks.

It seems that more and more games are going free2play in one form or another. I wonder how long it will be before WoW begins accepting a form of f2p as well.
