Each year, there are some things which we can use during events to make some extra gold. Here’s a few that I have used and do use during the Winter Veil event.
Hopefully, you read my Pre-Winter Veil gold tip, to make some gold, before the event started. This is a continuation of that post, but more as what to do now, that the event as started, to make gold.
You can /kiss a Winter Reveler found at any inn, to receive either Mistletoe or Fresh Holly. Mistletoe is soulbound, but can be used throughout the year, it gives a spirit buff. Fresh Holly, is not soulbound, and can be sold on the AH.
Preserved Holly, works the same as Fresh Holly, except you can do a quest to get it, either from Metzen the Reindeer (h)(a) or by using a Holly Preserver. Unfortunately, to use the Holly Preserver, you must have finished the quest for Metzen the Reindeer first, then done The Hero of the Day (h)(a) quest AND you need to be a master cook. If you do both the alliance and the horde version, you will be able to pick up an extra 10 for 10 gold, throughout the year. Preserved Holly is also not soulbound, and can be sold on the AH.
Tip: If you find Fresh or Preserved Holly for sale on the AH during the event, buy them up, to sell later after the event is over for more gold.
Also, make sure you grab all the Winter Veil gifts on ALL your characters. Each of these can be banked if the items are not taken from the gifts. Just leave the wrapped gift in the bank, for when you decide to use them. Depending on your level, you will be able to pick up one or more items.
Winter Veil Gift, will give you a pet, called Crashin’ Thrashin’ Racer Controller, which can be useful to explore new areas, and possibly pull aggro for a small group of mobs. It also counts towards the 100 pet achievement.

When we’re talking about leveling guides, a lot of them, are very well written, where they will tell you to go here, do that, kill this, go here, turn in quest, etc. Those guides are great, and there are a lot great guides for that. FTW Guides, Joana’s, Kozen’s, Zygor, Spugnort’s, Goblin’s etc. However this little tip is not about the good guides, but rather about the bad guides. These kind of guides, read more like an unofficial manual, which tell you what characters can do, they tell you to use the Bazaar, Auction House, Marketplace, Trading Post, and to sell recipes to make money. For leveling, they will give you the basics, you could pick up out of the manual.
So here’s my tip. If you ever want to pick up some leveling or class guides, for any game – DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy from Killer Guides nor from Prima guides. These are by far, the worst guides, you can ever waste your money on. You will end up spending countless amounts of money thinking you will be getting a guide to help you play your class better, to level quicker, or even to make more money, then the other guy that didn’t read the guide… It’s a fat lie, and the guides are only there to take your money, to make the guide sellers rich, not you.
But wait, there’s more. There’s another gold guide out there, that likes to regurgitate the same thing, across games as well. This guide is called gold-secrets. The author who made it, started with World of Warcraft, then made one for Age of Conan, and later Warhammer Online. I do not know if the author made any for any of the new games out, like Champions Online or Aion, or ??? However, the one thing I do know is the way you can always tell when he writes a crappy guide, or that the guide is his. He always writes on his pitch page “Gold Sellers Hate Me!“ What makes this guide so bad, is that he does all the basic things and offers generalized tips like buy low, sell high… or use the auction house to sell, use an auction addon, et cetera. What made this guide stand out? When he released his Age of Conan guide, he used a simple word replacement from World of Warcraft to Age of Conan. He did forget to change Auction House to Trading Post as well.
So here it is in summary.
- Do not buy Killer Guides
- Do not buy Prima Guides
- Do not buy Gold-Secrets, or anytime where the pitch page says “Gold Sellers Hate Me!“
And for the record, I am a gold seller, and I do hate him… for pitching crap to consumers.

If you’re not comfortable with massive AH trading, there are a few ways to make gold out of the AH without any risk. The best examples are Borean Leather and Cobalt Ore.
Borean Leather is kinda hard to sell on most servers and can go as low as 30S or 25S on some of them …. That’s pretty awesome when you realize that a Nerubian Chestguard takes 12 Borean Leather and sells for 5G 29S to the NPCs …. Yes, that’s 44S for each unit of leather. If you buy 25 stacks of Borean Leather for 5G each, you will get 95G just to buy them, go AFK while you craft 41 Nerubian Chestguard, come back to sell them at the closest NPC.
You can do the exact same thing with Cobalt Ore and Cobalt Bar, a Cobalt Triangle Shield takes 4 bars and sells for 5G54S, that’s 1G38S for each bar. In some occasions Cobalt will sell for 1G/unit at the AH and buying 15 stacks at this price will get you 114G just to craft a few shields.
