First off, let me assure you this isn’t just flaming one side of the argument. I am flaming both Artillery know-it-alls and those who have never played artillery and think they are all noobs. I am also going to tell you a few tips along the way, for both artillery and those of you who have never played one before.

World of Tanks Hand Leveling

I hate being called a noob, because my kill count isn’t high. I can assure you that I have been playing artillery for months now. I know how to play one. However it should never be assumed we aren’t doing our job because we don’t get the kill count. Sometimes, we hit a target and move on. Why? Because it takes longer to load, then it does for them to repair, and move on. I have damaged upto 13 tanks in a single battle (out of 15, thats damned impressive). But maybe I only get 1-2 kills. Playing WoT, is a team game. We all have our roles, including Arty and TDs. QQing about us not getting the kills, is for noobs.

I also hate the Arty who are all know-it alls. These are the guys who constantly whine that they don’t get anyone defending them, and it’s not their fault we lost a match. As I said above, this is a team effort, and to claim its not their fault, is a foolish thing. If we lose, it’s because it’s all our fault, including yours.

For those of you who have never played an Arty, let me tell you I have a 15 second load time, and another 5-8 seconds to aim. Now if the enemy isn’t moving, I have about 20 seconds, before I can hit them. I don’t get 100+ shots a minute, and even if I did I wouldn’t be very effective, right?

I can’t shoot around buildings. I can’t shoot through mountains. I can’t shoot blindly, simply because you click a square on the map. I only have 18 shots per game, with my German Grille. My first arty tank, had 14 shots. I also can’t shoot moving targets which twist, turn, randomly stop and use other evasive maneuvers. I have a limited amount of shots, my reload time sucks, and I can’t waste shots, just because you and your tank can.

Being artillery takes a Mad Skills and a ton of patience. Before you call someone a noob, try playing one, so you know how hard it is.

Artillery Tip #1

Follow the big push. If 10 tanks go left… Go left. I recently was in a battle, where the big push went right, the artillery went left. When a small set of tanks decimated them, they were whining, even though I and another had stayed to help them. If you follow about 3 squares behind the big rush (on big maps) you will have a better chance of helping your friends, and not fear being attacked on the other side.

Artillery Tip #2

Ask a medium and a Tank Destroyer to hang back and help you. The medium can give sufficient firepower and the TD is a long range spotter. If they won’t hang back with you, then use the tactic above instead.

Artillery Tip #3

Take 2-3 shots, then move. The enemy artillery can spot where your shots come from. It takes 1-2 to get the general idea of where you are, and another 1 to find the origin of the shots. If you stay in the same spot, you will get fired upon.

Artillery Tip #4

If there are more then one artillery, don’t stay close to them. Instead you want to move at minimum, 1 square away. Being side-by-side is a recipe for disaster. One light tank can come in and tank out/spot both of you at the same time, allowing the enemy to target and kill your tank.

I saw an enemy arty shoot between 2 different arty, and hit them both, since they were both together.

Artillery Tip #5

If you spot an enemy tank, or they get within 1-2 squares of you, or if someone is shooting you, move immediately. The enemy arty, will shoot the spot you were in even if they lose sight of you, hoping to hit you. I have done this many times to the enemy, since they thought they were safe and didnt move.

Artillery Tip #6

Don’t stay at the starting point, when you start a battle. The enemy will send in a light tank, to that spot or even just watch for shots coming out of there. Move to the left, right, or even backwards, but get out of there asap.

Artillery Tip #7

You can target lock and shoot an enemy, while not in overhead view. It’s really only good when the enemy is close to you, and not next to you. Going in arty mode, will just make you miss 100% of the time.

Artillery Tip #8

If someone calls you a noob, ignore them or refer them to this article. If they persist, and you aren’t on a team… light his arse up.

Don’t be afraid to prove you aren’t. Get out of Arty mode, and then hold the alt key. You can then use this to spot the retard and shoot his ass, proving you aren’t the noob, and that he is. It’s sure to piss him off which is why we don’t do this if we are in a company, but you can then get other arty’s to rally on his arse too.

Artillery Tip #9

If you have an ally who is sitting doing nothing, being a know-it-all (and blaming others for the impending loss), or worse shooting your own team members, let the other side know where he is, and help guide their shots. This way, they get a kill, you don’t get a negative kill, and everyone is happy – well almost.

Ok, so #8 & #9 aren’t normal things you might want to do, but I really am sick of the know-it-alls and the noob callers.

Artillery Tip #10

Don’t be afraid to run away from the enemy. You followed the 10 tank rush, they wiped… run away. Get to a better position, with a new spotter, so you fight again.

Artillery Tip #11

You’re the last tank on the field, your enemies have devastated your troops. Don’t try to play hero and kill the 3 remaining tanks. The best you can hope for now, is a draw. Lead them away from your base with well placed shots, and hope they lose time and are unable to cap… nor find you.

Artillery Tip #12

Hiding in a bush, knocking over trees to make a haven… is stupid. You can hide behind a bush and it will still give you that 25% plus to camouflage. The enemy thinks you will hide in bushes, and will aim for them. If you make a haven, get behind it, not in it. The enemy can then waste shots on where they think you should be, not where you really are.

Artillery Tip #13

Remember, camouflage only works, if you don’t move. Once you move, it stops working. So if the enemy passes by you, let them get a distance away, before you turn to shoot them. Otherwise, you will simply give up your position and have no time to turn to shoot them.

Artillery Tip #14

Order of importance of targets…

  1. Artillery
  2. Tank Destroyers
  3. Light Tank
  4. Heavy Tank
  5. Medium Tank

Why are Tank Destroyers more important then Light tanks? They can see far, and make excellent spies for enemy artillery. Light tanks can move fast, and scout the enemy, which is why they are above Heavies. However the best and foremost to take down in any fight, enemy Artillery.
