I have seen a lot of complaints lately, that Artillery are overpowered, should be nerfed, or even removed from the game. I want to set the record straight. IMHO World of Tanks Artillery/SPG are not overpowered. However, maybe you have a different view. I would like to hear your opinions on this matter, and have set up a poll, to see if you actually still think they are, after you read what I have to say.

World of Tanks Hand Leveling

Artillery Weaknesses

  • Slow to move.
  • Slow to turn.
  • Limited view range (have to move whole tank to shoot left or right)
  • 30 seconds reload time.
  • 15 seconds aiming time.
  • Time to turn around can add 15 more seconds.
  • Hitting a moving target is extremely difficult.
  • Very weak armor, 1-2 hits usually takes them out.
  • 2.5x experience over regular tanks needed to level.
  • Stock tanks, can only shoot 4 squares out.
  • Needs scouts, to see other squares.
  • Needs Tier IX radio, expensive at lower levels.
  • Requires several shots to take out medium and heavy tanks.
  • Needs 1-2 tanks per group of Artillery to be defended.
  • Can only view 1 square at a time.

Artillery Strengths

  • Upgraded Arty can shoot across entire map – requires Tier 3 tank.
  • Upgraded gun can take out weaker armored tanks in 1 shot.
  • Can see and spot shell trails, to determine where enemy might be. Good for intelligence reports.
  • Can watch enemy destroy destructables, to determine where tanks might be.

Conclusion

So the complaint went that artillery were getting more kill counts then other tanks – every game. I am an experienced Artillery and have gotten a max of 4 kills in one game. More often then not however I get 1-3, which is the same as if I were playing any other tank. I don’t think Artillery are overpowered, I simply think that they use opportunity to benefit their killings. For example they shoot the weaker limping tanks, to get the kill. Most of the time,they just damage the enemy. A lot of times, they simply miss.

In any military operation, each person on the battlefield, has a role to play. Some are the pawns or cannon fodder – the fools who simply rush to be destroyed – usually light or fast mediums. Some are the might, like the slower medium and heavy tanks. And still some, are the snipers like TD’s and SPG’s. If you took out the snipers out of the equation, then every battle would be the same – both sides rushing to the other flag to see which got there first and put more tanks on it. This is why Snipers, including Artillery are necessary to the game. If they had weaker guns, then the same scenario would happen as outlined above. no one would be afraid of them, and simply rush into battle.
