Today is an important day for LOTRO: we’ve announced that this fall, LOTRO will begin offering a Free-to-Play option! Players will be able to download the game and adventure in Middle-earth for free. With Free-to-Play comes the addition of the LOTRO Store, where players will have immediate in-game access to a wide variety of special items, account services, and convenience items.

The best part is – as existing subscribers you’re automatically enrolled in our VIP program! As a VIP you’ll continue to get unlimited access to the game and all of the content you already enjoy, in addition to some extra perks! We know you’re curious how all of this will work and what it all means for you personally, so here are some handy links to all of the details:

  • Official LOTRO Free-to-Play Press Release
  • A letter from Kate Paiz, Executive Producer LOTRO
  • FAQ
  • VIP Chart
Still have questions? Here’s a quick FAQ about the key points of LOTRO Free-to-Play:

Is this the same model you used with DDO?

It’s very similar in a large number of ways. The basic structure is the same with some changes made to support LOTRO’s different game world and wide-open environment. Customer levels, the LOTRO Store, and other aspects of LOTRO Free-to-Play are all very similar to those of Dungeons and Dragons Online®: Eberron Unlimited™.

I already subscribe to LOTRO. Is there any benefit to staying a subscriber?

Of course! Once the game goes live you’ll keep all your current privileges, and also accrue 500 free Turbine Points per month to spend as you wish. We also have a set of Loyalty Reward Special Offers just for our veteran players – as long as you maintain your subscription in good standing you may be eligible for up to 3,000 points. If you stay active over the summer you will also earn an additional bonus of 500 Turbine Points per month until launch! For more details see the Loyalty Reward Special Offer Terms & Conditions for full details.

I have a lifetime subscription to LOTRO. What will Free-to-Play mean for me?

As a lifetime subscriber to LOTRO, you will keep all of your membership privileges and are automatically upgraded to VIP status. You will receive 500 Free Turbine Points every month like the other VIPs, but you do not have to pay a monthly fee since you are a lifetime member. All you have to do is keep playing the game and visit the LOTRO Store to spend your free Turbine Points. Lifetime members may also qualify for a special one-time Loyalty Reward of 1,000 Turbine Points. See the Loyalty Reward Special Offer Terms & Conditions for full details.

I am a LOTRO Founder. What will Free-to-Play mean for me?

As a LOTRO Founder, you automatically become a VIP and will keep all of your membership privileges as long as you pay your monthly fee. You will automatically receive 500 Free Turbine Points every month and you can spend them at your leisure in the LOTRO Store. Founding members may also qualify for a special one-time Loyalty Reward of 500 Turbine Points. See the Loyalty Reward Special Offer Terms & Conditions for full details.

Will there be a Free-to-Play Beta and when will it start?

Yes! The Beta will start in the very near future. We’ll begin accepting signups immediately at www.lotro.com/betasignup!

I’m a new or returning player. How do I sign up for Beta?

Start by registering at www.lotro.com/betasignup. We’ll select entrants from that list once beta starts.

I’m an existing customer. How do I sign up for the Beta?

Existing subscribers do not need to register to apply for the beta – we’ll randomly invite subscribers who have been active in the last 30 days and have an account in good standing throughout the beta. If you wish to register at www.lotro.com/betasignup that will count as an extra entry and may increase your chance of being selected for participation.

Is there any way to increase my chance of getting into the beta?

Sure! Follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook! We’ll give out special beta entry codes to our fans via social media – so give yourself the best chance of getting in and make sure to keep an eye on Twitter and Facebook for updates. Continue reading »

You may have seen Graythandor’s post with what he has ferreted out of posts made by the Devs concerning what is upcoming for Lotro. Graythandor’s What’s coming? Here’s what we know from it:

OK, so here’s what we know for sure (i.e. confirmed by a dev or the community team):

There will be an announcement soon, potentially at E3 (June 15-17)

http://forums.lotro.com/showpost.php?p=4658401&postcount=226

Fair enough. You guys know we’re preparing an announcement. I can’t give you a specific date as to when we’ll make it, but I can say I just ran into Adam Mersky coming out of an E3 planning meeting and he was pretty stoked!

Turbine will be presenting at E3 under the Warner Brothers banner

http://forums.lotro.com/showpost.php?p=4660739&postcount=27

Correct – we’ll be there as part of the Warner Bros. family.

We will get new icons for something at some point.

http://forums.lotro.com/showpost.php?p=4658437&postcount=234

Actually, I can confirm that right now. There will be new icons!
(I can’t wait for them to be cut and have everyone yell at me for promising them!)

Fear debuffs will no longer invisibly stack in the next update.

This is information based on a couple spring festivals, and it all seems to have been the same so far, with the exception of the tart recipe. I’ve done my best to split this up into different sections as listed below to make it easier to find information.

Since I have done so well on lotteries (it figures that I can’t equal it irl   ), I am going to give you a bit more info, now that Turbine has today introduced a new improved/increased lottery schedule:

New Lottery Schedules and Info!

We’re thrilled to see how much enthusiasm there is for the LOTRO lottery system! Like all new features we introduce, we’ve been paying very close attention to the feedback you’ve provided and as a result, we’re making some changes to the lotteries.

Welcome Wagon Lottery (Level 1-20)

Three times per week! Starts Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 3:00PM Eastern and ends on Wednesday, Friday, and Monday (respectively) at 9:00AM Eastern.

Lottery of The Free Peoples (Level 21-49)

Three times per week! Starts Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 3:00PM Eastern and ends on Wednesday, Friday, and Monday (respectively) at 9:00AM Eastern.

Monday Lottery (Level 50-65)

Starts Monday at 3:00PM Eastern. Ends Wednesday at 9:00AM Eastern.

Hevensday Lottery (Level 50-65)

Starts Wednesday at 3:00PM Eastern. Ends Friday at 9:00AM Eastern.

Highday Lottery (Level 50-65)

Starts Friday at 3:00PM Eastern. Ends Monday at 9:00AM Eastern.

What can I win in the LOTRO Lotteries?

We’re not going to ruin the fun — you’ll have to check in to see what items are up for grabs! The Monday, Hevensday, and Highday lotteries will constantly change. You never know what we might slip in there! We can tell you the Welcome Wagon Lottery and The Lottery of The Free Peoples will always have items that are useful for players of the appropriate levels.

Additional LOTRO Lotteries

During special events and holidays or just because we feel like having a little fun, we’ll sneak in additional lotteries. So make sure you check my.lotro.com frequently to avoid missing any!

The main reason for using the trick originally was simply to get exp and loot, and thats nerfed now. Few bother with this any more. BUT, although you can no longer farm loot, coin, and reputation items with this, you CAN while in Tinnudir kill Annuminas Angmarims without going TO Annuminas for earning Wisdom Deed : Invaders From Angmar (120 title/240 virtue).

Prerequisite:

Completion of Volume 1, Book 9, Chapter 8 Amarthiel’s Hope

http://lotro.mmodb.com/quests/chapter-8:-amarthiels-hope-1360.php

From the Tinnudir Reflecting Pool (12.0S, 68.1W), choose Amarthiel’s Hope and enter the instance

  • In this instance you have a healer (protecter), Two archers, and two fighters to assist you.
  • If you do ONE point of damage on a mob, you get exp, and a kill credit for the virtue.
  • There are 20 mobs plus one boss who counts for exp but not the virtue.
  • The archer mobs in this instance also count for kills needed in: Vol. I, Book 10: The City of the Kings, Chapter 3
    • http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Quest:Vol._I%2C_Book_10%2C_Chapter_3%3A_The_Battle_for_Ann%C3%BAminas

The hard part is getting one spell, smack, kick WHATEVER you need to do to put one point of damage on each mob before the posse of 5 kill them.

They have 5 helpers. NEVER argo the leftmost mobs, you will have to pull them seperately after boss fight.

Instructions:

  1. Enter instance, Click Protector to start
  2. Pull mo0bs on right, bring to the other three mobs labeled 1
  3. Pull the 2 marked 2
  4. Pull the 2 marked 3
  5. Pull the left mob by bush (not under the awning) to the other mobs by stair for 4
  6. Kill boss mob (5) which 50% of time will have enough silver to cover your repairs, and actually earn a teeny profit).
  7. Pull two mobs under awning for 6
  8. Pull three by tent (on diagram as campfire) one mob is a healer/summoner, for 7
  9. Pull three mobs by campfire for last pull, there is a time limit so you have to pull quickly!
  • On the raised area that the 5 allies are waiting for you (they will not follow you) There is a large chunk of ruin, and ahead a tree, use these to duck behind so the archer mobs will come closer and argo the faithful five….
  • Use your next target to quickly select, damage, and move to next mob to make sure you get a kill credit, and experience if you are of level.
  • If you do it perfect you need 18 sessions to get your 360 total kills needed for the virtue. BUT Turbine recently added a 5 instance per hour limit so this isn’t as fast as it used to be…

* Volume III, Book 1, Patch 1 Delayed

EDIT Patch rescheduled for Monday April 26, 2010, so make sure you have created empty slots for all your characters by the day before….Patch notes:

http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Release_Notes_Volume_3_Book_1_Patch_1_Official

During the final round of testing and verification for tomorrow’s patch, we discovered an issue with shared storage that would impact a significant portion of our players. We feel the potential consequences are an unacceptable risk. As a result, we are delaying the patch, the return of the Spring Festival, and our Anniversary events until we are able to resolve the issue. We apologize for the short notice, and thank you for your understanding and patience!

A new promotion is _scheduled *_ to start when you log off 4-25-2010, to receive the gifts you MUST have several open slots available

Writ of Virtue

The Writ of Virtue: This special scroll will show the Bards that you know the value of revelry and celebration! The Writ grants a passive skill that gives you a 20 percent discount with Bards all across Middle-earth. Starting on April 21st and running throughout the celebration, we’re giving all current, new and returning subscribers a special gift: the Writ of Virtue, a reward for loyalty and a steadfast heart. But you have to come to the party to get your gift; make sure to log into the game between April 21 and June 30th for this token of our appreciation. Note: You must have space available in your Character’s inventory for the writ to be granted. Please confirm that you have free space (more than one slot is recommended)available before you log out on Tuesday April 20.

A whats new in Lotro

2009 was exciting, as for a while there were two major exploits which have both been removed on the NA servers and I believe the EU servers but may still be working (but being banned for) in the Russian server.

The NA Lotro is (to me) doomed, dying, done….
The life time subscribers get on mostly to talk they go through the motions just to have something to do while talking but most kins are reaching out to just get 6 people to do some of the instances (when you get begging tells from people every night needing a healer, and they say they thought yours was one of the biggest kins? and are told yeah but no one gets on anymore...)

The forced three month extensions that many had to buy to get SoM, expired March-ish and those that extended three months didn’t re-subscribe after even getting our massive (complete in three hours) March 1st patch….

The Spring Festival is here but as usual Turbine can’t even get that right a list of known issues: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?&postid=4510986 Continue reading »

Oath of the Rangers

Written by Ashling

Recently Turbine released Volume 3, Book 1: Oath of the Rangers onto the live LotRO servers. This patch includes a lot of much needed and eagerly awaited features such as four Skirmishes, new skill upgrades, new level 65 crafting recipes and the Depths of Nurz Ghashu instance.

Taken from the official website:

Skirmishes:

  • At the Necromancer’s Gate, a powerful Olog-Hai thinks he’s king of the hill, and your force must prove him wrong.
  • Before the Gate of the Ringwraith’s Lair, creatures of nightmare seek to lay a deadly trap.
  • Man the catapults! A powerful force seeks to capture the outpost at Thangúlhad, and you must drive them back into the darkness.
  • In the dungeons of Dannenglor, captured elves face torment and destruction, unless you can rescue them from the Enemy!

LotroLCD is an attempt to use the LCD on the Logitech G15/G19 keyboards for something useful while playing LOTRO.

The default applet from Turbine only displays redundant information and is hence quite useless. As far as I know LotroLCD does not violate any EULA or Code of Conduct from Turbine or Codemasters since there are already other utilities which parse LOTRO logs in real-time and display the information (on a second screen for dual monitor setup) which are recognized and allowed, the same should apply to LotroLCD.

Lotro LCD shows information about spell timers, combat statistics and anything else that can be found in Lotro log files on your LCD in realtime.

Here is a sample of what can be shown:

If you want to buy all the supplier ingredients at the personal house discount and make multiple recipes at once without running back and forth to the vault or auction house for ingredients, use this program to easily figure out your calculations.

This is not a game hack, nor will it get you banned, as it is a 3rd party program which does NOT interface with the game.

If you are going to wipe at Durchest, you can keep the gauntlet from being reset. When you know you are going to wipe, have a melee that has already died and been dead for 10 seconds (to be sure that any HoT is gone), can release but be sure there are no RK rocks. After releasing, that person runs to the fountain that is in the room at the bottom of the stairs. After everyone dies and Durchest resets, have the rest of the members release. Just clear back to Durchest room.

OK, so you are bound to have noticed by now that we have a custom, private instance that, while limited a bit, has a wide number of uses apart from doing the actual skirmish. Here are a few of my favorites, add yours :)

The Bio break: Ok, when you gotta go, you gotta go and not everyone’s mom is like cartman’s so…. you join the prancing pony and dont talk to captain obvious to start the event. Bam, you have teleported from the nasty, crowded orc camp that you were questing in to a safe place, so you can go afk in safety.

The LI buster: Step up to mr forge master, and pop into one of the easy skirmishes. Equip your victim LI, kill a wave of mobs, and cancel the quest for the skirmish (this teleports you out). However, this does NOT reset your instance until you either time out or fail it, so you can go right back in…. kill, pop out, bust, enter, kill, pop out,….. until all your items are now in relic form.

The trader: You ever notice that when you mail your pal a full stack of iron bars, the shipping and handling for the in game mail system is hundreds of silver? So, you chase the other player down in bree or 21st or something to hand it over, spending 80 silver on horse rides instead….. bah! Simply group up and join a group skirmish, hand over the goods, and pop right back out of there.

The sanctuary: You want to pretend you are leetsauce, and here in the forums, you are, at least according to yourself. But if you care to admit it, there are times when you overdid it and the mobs are spawning fast and thick, you killed that last one with 200 morale and 0 power and they are already respawning…. jump in and chat with elrond’s boys, have a snack down by the river, and come back to reality with full health, food ticking, and ready to take it to those orcs!

Anyway, I am finding the free teleport to a safe, shared instance very handy from time to time as you can see. Anyone else thinking along these lines?
